There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

editThis media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Sphere-and-ring_balance_board_underside.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- I specified the author (i.e., myself) when I uploaded the photo to Wikimedia Commons in September 2008. I specified the GFDL license later the same day. Was there a problem with the syntax of either of those items? David Maisel (talk) 17:52, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:46, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

I deleted the image per your reqeust. The image is not to large to be displayed, .tif files are generally not displaied. They can be uploaded for restoration purposes, but they can not be thumbnailed to Wikipedia. Please switch the file to the prefered jpg. Regards, --Martin H. (talk) 03:02, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

File tagging Image:E-ZBar for bicycle beginner.box's photo.jpg
editThis media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:E-ZBar for bicycle beginner.box's photo.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:Image:E-ZBar for bicycle beginner.box's photo.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Wobble board thumb frame MotD 2011-7-8.jpg
editHallo DavidMaisel, why did you upload File:Wobble board thumb frame MotD 2011-7-8.jpg? Do you know that you can select and embedd the video with the thumbtime parameter? This eliminates the need for this separate thumb, doesn't it? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:41, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hello, Saibo-- Thanks for the advice. I will be glad to "select and embed the video" after I find out what that phrase means. Please explain.David Maisel (talk) 04:24, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, Saibo. Done. That's much simpler and makes the thumb appear where it belongs.David Maisel (talk) 07:01, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- Fine. if you still have any questions feel free to ask. See also here Commons:Video#Video_usage. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:23, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Wobble boards?
editHi, I saw you wrote a lot of stuff about wobble boards and posted some pictures too. I was wondering if you could recommend one to me? I checked the one in the first set of pictures, but it has only one uninformative Amazon review and I couldn't find anything else about it. This board seems popular on Amazon, do you have any thoughts about it? Or, alternatively, a third choice? I'd want one that is adjustable so I can keep working with it. I'd really appreciate your thoughts (or a pointer towards a resource online with reviews) and thanks again for the great work on that article! --80.74.170.79 19:52, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
- There are customers' reviews at the websites of some of the distributors of wobble boards that the searchbox at Google's "Shopping" tab leads to.
Recommendations for choosing a wobble board to buy are at this webpage and this other webpage.
Typing "choosing a wobble board that" in Google's searchbox delivers about ten hits.
You can get more advice from a health club or physical therapist. Maybe they would let you pay to try out their wobble boards.
About the 1st model your above posting (of August 16 to my Talk Page) linked to at Amazon:
Its less steep setting is too easy to develop the balancing skills of people who aren't elderly or recovering from an injury. Its steeper setting is for people who have already spent about a year and a half (daily) going through the levels described as less challenging than it in the first page that I linked to above.
The 2nd model your posting linked to at Amazon:
I haven't tried it. You could ask the manufacturer what its least steep incline is. Most people start at about 13 degrees unless they've already done some other kind of balance training, such as yoga or gymnastics.
Anyone buying a wobble board should also buy wrist-guards that have hard splints. They are sold in sporting goods stores, skateboard stores and snowboard stores. The longer the splint, the better. Other safety tips are in the top third of p. 21 of this PDF. The rest of that page (p. 21) is about rocker-roller boards (not wobble boards).
Thanks for the comment about my Wikipedia material. David Maisel (talk) 04:53, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
Permission to use File:Helmeted boy on training wheels.jpg
editDear Sir, I am an editor. I wish to use the picture of File:Helmeted boy on training wheels.jpg in one of my science book. The content talk about extra wheels and stability. Please contact me by email: jouehuey.yeoh@pearson.com For any permission clearance. Thank you. Regards, Joue Huey
- Hello, Joue Huey-- You already have the legal right to include the photo Helmeted boy on training wheels.jpg in the book that you are editing because the photo's author published it under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. You can read the terms of that license at the webpage where the author published the photo by clicking there on "Some rights reserved" under the heading "License." You don't need to contact the author and you don't need to pay. You need only to credit the author and cite the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license.
- I am not acquainted with the photo's author. My only connection to that photo is that I am the person who found it at Flickr and uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons.
- If you aren't already intending to include information about balance bikes and the Gyrobike in your book, I suggest that you see them at these webpages:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Balance_bicycles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrobike
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gyrobike
- One disadvantage of learning to ride with training wheels (instead of on a balance bike or Gyrobike) is that training wheels teach the bad habit of steering in the same direction as the turn. What a rider does on a bike without training wheels is start a turn by steering in the opposite direction of the turn and then finish the turn by steering in the direction of the turn. This is explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countersteering
